I bring up this point because I have recently had as clients many families who have come to the US in the last ten years, have young children, and are faced with the decision of whether to name guardians who are here in the United States or back in their home country. I admit that, in a somewhat blustery pro-US kind of way, I may find myself steering clients toward planting their kids in the US. This article is my attempt to create a dialogue around this issue so I can understand and become a better adviser to my clients.
With that said, I welcome comments on the following questions, either privately through email or posting here, FB, or linkedin):
1. What are the pros and cons of your kids going back to your home country if you and your spouse die? (All else being equal, i.e., assuming that their are solid guardian choices in both countries).
2. On a broader level, when, if ever, does your "home" become the US and not the country of your birth?
3. What (emotional/psychological) factors do I need to understand to better advise my clients?
